Tree stump removal is a big part of our business, and we’re often asked if it's necessary. Trees are a thing of nature, so leaving a tree stump in the earth is certainly natural.  However, tree stumps can hurt your property value, be a safetyTomentosus Root Rot hazard, and bring unwanted pests into your yard. Here are a few good reasons to consider having a tree stump removed from your yard.

Curb Appeal

Tree stumps aren’t pretty. Period. Removing it from your yard takes care of an eyesore for you and your neighbors. In addition, the new growth formed by the stump could further damage your curb appeal. The roots may damage sidewalks, driveways and patios by the force of the roots pushing upward. In severe cases, the roots could even work their way underneath your home and ultimately cause costly structural damage.

Property Value

Because tree stumps are unsightly, some believe they can lower your property value. Think about it. Would you rather buy a home with a yard of blooming, well-maintained trees? Or one with even one tree stump left behind? The tree stump may have already started working its way under valuable parts of the property. Purchasing a home that requires expensive repairs is not something most buys are prepared to take on. Having well-maintained mature trees will increase your property value, an old unsightly stump will not.

Safety

Not only do you risk tripping over a tree stump and injuring yourself, a tree stump could also turn into a liability if a neighbor or someone else has a misadventure. Tree stumps are a notorious safety hazard for children who often run and play without having a firm grasp on their surroundings. Remember, if someone injures themselves on your property, you are liable, even if they didn’t have permission to be in your yard. In addition, stumps can seriously damage lawn equipment if it gets in the way while mowing.

Efficiency

Speaking of mowing, wouldn’t it be great to not have to mow around that ugly, old tree stump? Stump removal can take care of that!

Space

For obvious reasons, tree stumps take up space in your yard. If you’re looking to plant new trees, create a garden space, add a pool or build a play place, a stump could foil your plans. In addition, (this is true for live trees, too) as mentioned above, roots could continue to grow and interfere with other infrastructure such as pipes, sidewalks, driveways, and so on.

Infestations and Disease

Tree stumps attract insects and other vermin and could harbor diseases that can spread to other tree life. While it’s true that live trees can also be vulnerable to infestations and disease, tree stumps are especially vulnerable.

New Growth

Tree stumps actually have the ability to sprout new growth again, many times seeing new trees sprout up around the stump. Not only is this a bit of an eyesore, but it could be more expensive to remove now that new roots have established themselves.
